As stated in the previous email this section is for Sproul researchers to post their brick wall. It is helpful if you can provide information on your earliest known ancestor and their family unit, place of residence(s) and any other identifiable information.     From Merrill Sproul,

    My Gr Gr Gr Gr Gr grandfather is Robert S. Sproul. This is an educated guess based on the age of his son Ebeneezer and the fact that a Robert Sproul is on the rolls for fighting in the American Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, I have been thus far unable to find any definitive proof that he is my direct relative. I do know that his father (Robert Sproul 1716-1793) arrived in Bristol, ME from Belfast in the early to mid 1730's. The name of the Ancestry tree is Merrill Frederick Sproul III Family Tree.

    I am the 2nd great grandson of Mary L Sproul(e) Tierney. I know very little about her. I do have her death certificate, but it does not confirm her last name or place of birth.

    According to my Uncle who started his genealogy research back in the 1980’s when his mother, my grandmother were around, she is from Northern Ireland and was a Methodist. He also believed that her brother was a Methodist minister in Australia

    I did find a Mary Sproule, b circa 1830 arriving in the United States on 25 October 1847 on board the "West Point”. This same ship manifest has a James Tierney (My great x2 grandfather’s name) b. circa 1923. Their first child was born in 1952, so this could be them.

    I have had my DNA tested through Ancestry.com (both Y-DNA/mtDNA and the autosomal DNA test ) My mom, a closer Sproule relative to Mary had her autosomal DNA test done. Both are publicly available on Ancestry.com

    Thomas died March 13, 1872 in Caugherty, Racavan, Antrim, Ireland
    His wife was Rose Sproule b. 1806, d. 1879
    Their Children were
    1) Ann Eliza Sproule b. 1836 d. 1944
    2) Benjamin Sproule b. 1838
    3)Thomas Sproule b. 1841 d. 1864 in Ballymena
    4) Sarah Jane Sproule b. 1842 d. 1902
    5) Margaret Jane Sproule b. 1846
    6) Matilda Sproule b. 1847
    I show all of them born in Caugherty/Caherty

Why this Addiction Called Genealogy?

No doubt there are many, many reasons we have such a passion for genealogy. For me it started with an innocent question from my doctor. During a routine exam when I was 28 years old the doctor asked me what kinds of illnesses and diseases are prevalent in my family. I told him my father and three of my four grandparents were already deceased. They all passed but the only one I really knew the circumstances of their death was my father. Progress!!!

The FTDNA sale is half over and we have made some real progress. We have gained several new members recently, some members have taken advantage of the Big Y/Free Y-111 one-time only offer (must have a minimum of YSTR-12 either previously tested or currently batched) and many STR upgrades. This is very exciting and I cannot tell you how important your contribution is to our cause. We share many issues with our brick walls and as you are keenly aware many of us bottleneck in Ireland. This is why it is incredibly important to Y-STR test as far out to YSTR-111 as you can. Those subtle mutations in our markers help sort out our cousin lines. The Big Y test gives us more permanent marker values that can be aged to help give us a reasonable time period when our specific cousin branch may have occurred. ySTR or Autosomal Testing???

After the last emailed "newsletter" I received some questions and comments regarding what ySTR or S hort T andem R epeats of the Y chromosome is, and the difference between it and autosomal testing, and which test is beneficial to my research. Well to answer that question let's take a look at what each test is, who can take it and what will they tell us. Y Chromosomal or Y-DNA Testing A Y chromosome DNA test or more commonly known as Y-DNA test, is primarily a genealogical test that is used to determine a direct male (more specifically your father's) patrilineal or direct male line of ancestry.
